1927–1937: The Women Who Put Tallulah Falls on the Map

When The Circle for Children was founded in 1927 as the Young Matrons Circle for Tallulah Falls School, its members set out with a simple but ambitious goal: to improve the lives of children in the mountains of North Georgia. What followed during the organization’s first decade was a remarkable combination of creativity, determination, and community leadership that captured the attention of people across Georgia—and even the nation.

One of the most memorable moments came when First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt recognized the work of the Young Matrons. Moved by their efforts to showcase the handcrafted artwork created by students at Tallulah Falls School, Mrs. Roosevelt agreed to participate in an Arts & Crafts Exhibit at Rich’s Tea Room, where she delivered a talk titled The Social Value of Handicraft.

The event brought together an extraordinary audience, including the Tallulah Falls School Board of Trustees, Georgia’s First Lady, Mrs. Eugene Talmadge, officers of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs, members of the Young Matrons Circle, and civic leaders from across the state. More importantly, it helped shine a spotlight on the challenges facing children in the North Georgia mountains while raising awareness and support for the school’s mission.

The Young Matrons were equally known for turning fundraising into unforgettable community events.

One of the most beloved traditions of the era was the Junior Horse Show, held at the Biltmore Riding Academy on Roxboro Road. Described in the Atlanta Constitution as an event rivaling the excitement of the Kentucky Derby, the horse show combined elegance, entertainment, and philanthropy.

More than 100 young Atlantans, ages 5 to 18, participated in competitions showcasing skills such as side-saddle riding, jumping, and horsemanship. Hundreds of spectators gathered to cheer them on as ribbons, trophies, badges, and treats were awarded throughout the day. While the event was filled with excitement and celebration, its purpose remained clear: every ticket sold and every dollar raised helped support the students of Tallulah Falls School.
